How a Manufacturer can Sell his Products and Goods

Introduction:

A manufacturer has three main ways to sell and make his goods available at the market.
The first is by means of advertisement. By advertising his product the manufacturer create demand for his goods at the retail shops. The retailer are eventually compelled to buy more from him.

As a second alternative, a manufacturer may employ his own selling staff to undertake the distribution of the goods in certain districts. This especially occurs where in such districts the wholesale demand for the product is very great.

The third alternative is for the manufacturer to sell his products through an agent's. This agent may act for one manufacturer alone, but usually he represent several other manufacturers. The agent may work on commission basis or he may act as principal, buying and selling on his own behalf.

There are some principal disadvantages attaching to the employment of an agent. He may be acting for other firms as well and as such may not give his best attention to the sale of the product entrusted to him. Again, he may have bias toward the products of a particular manufacturer and may not secure as large a volume of sales as an employee will do. This is particularly likely where a competing firm grants a higher rate of commission.

To ensure whole hearted cooperation of such agents manufacturer may have to grant them sole or exclusive selling right over a certain expenditures. Furthermore, to avoid friction, it is desirable that the areas of the various agents should be so alloted as to eliminate competition among them, which is also not an easy task to accomplish.
