The four major type of private enterprise retail outlets in Nigeria are as follows:

1. The hawkers
2. The department stores
3. The supermarket
4. The Mobil shops

What is a private enterprise retail outlets?

Private enterprise

Private enterprise retail outlets refer to businesses that are privately owned and operated and engage in the sale of goods or services to consumers. These outlets can include various types of stores, such as grocery stores, clothing shops, electronics stores, and more, that are not government-owned or part of a publicly traded corporation. Private enterprise retail outlets are typically owned by individuals or private companies and operate for profit, aiming to meet the needs and preferences of their customers while generating revenue for the owners.

1. The hawkers:

These are retailers who have no fixed premises. They use a cart or a van to carry goods. Others carry headloards of assorted goods and call at their customer doors. They normally sell food items as well as other household items and cosmetics.

2. The department stores:

These consist of many shops under one roof where each department vies with the other to increase its share of the business. These stores are normally sited in the center of big cities. The aim of the department store is to provide a complete range of shopping centres under one roof. Shopping is made as pleasant as possible with services such as hair dressing salon and restaurants often available in the same premises.

3. The supermarket:

These are self service stores. They cut out personal service by shop assistant. Basket are provided for customers to pick their goods in and carry them to the cashier for payments. They offer many deferent types of goods and cut the price of items wherever possible. Supermarkets have a tradition of operating even during night hours o that workers can make their purchases after work.

4. The Mobil shops:

Mobile shops are useful to people living in country districts and city surbubs. The development of housing estates far from city centre has led to a great increase in the sale of foodstuff and household goods from travelling vans. Traveling shops are suitable for goods in regular demand and the great majority of them sell groceries, green groceries and meat. They are not suitable for heavy goods for which a wide choice is desired
