Who is a counselor?

 

 

The positive characteristics of a counselor:

 

1.      He should be understanding and broadminded

2.      He should exhibit stability

3.      He should be tactful

4.      He has to be holistic

5.      He should be tolerance

6.      He should be accepting

7.      He should be intellectually and emotionally honest

8.      He should be spontaneous i.e. natural without force

9.      He should recognize and analyze the strength and weaknesses of others

10.  He should be professionally committed

11.  He should establish value system

12.  He should be aware of counseling goals

13.  He should be able to communicate effectively

14.  He should be able to observe the ethics of the profession

15.  He should be aware of individual differences

 

Negative characteristics of a counselor

 

1.      Intellectually inferior to take decisions

2.      Insensitive to the needs and rights of others

3.      Inability to function under pressure

4.      Emotionally charged

5.      Defensive

6.      Emotionally insecurity

7.      Double standard personality

8.      Autocratic and a dictator

9.      Lacks persistence and imagination

10.  Professionally uncommitted.

 

What the counselor does:

1.      He helps and develop the guidance program and the curriculum in relation to the needs of the individual pupils

2.      He helps each pupil through the counseling relationship

3.      He assumes the role of a leader and consultant in the schools program of students appraisal by coordinating, interpreting and helping to identify persons with special abilities or needs

4.      He collects and disseminates information to student and their parents about offerings and opportunities for further education.

5.      He coordinates the use of services available beyond those he can provide by making appropriate referrals

6.      He assists in providing placement services for students by planning with teachers and school administration and helping students make better choices from school to another level of education

7.      Helps parent as a consultant by providing them with information about educational and occupational requirement of all students

8.      He serves as a consultant to members of the administration and teaching staff in areas of guidance and counseling by sharing with students, up to date with them and helping them to identify student with special abilities and needs and problems

9.      He conduct and cooperate with others in conducting local researches in relation to students needs

10.  He carries out a program of public relation by participating in program of various communities for example on radio, television, and publishing.
