Once a post gets to the top ten ranking in Google's search engine results page (SERP) for keywords related to your business, keeping that spot can be a bit like the child's game "King of the Hill" -- your competitors will be doing everything they can to knock you down with their own pages. A bit of maintenance helps ensure you keep your SERP position and even help you climb to the very top spot. You can perform this maintenance by tweaking your post for the keywords Google is matching it with, building relevant links to the post and by making sure the page loads quickly for your visitors.

Tweaking the Page for Keywords

1

Make a note of the keyword or keyword combination your post is ranking well for in Google. These are the words you type in the search field at the top of the page.

2

Look for the keyword in the page description Google has beneath your link. If it is not there, go back to the blog post and then insert the keyword in the post description in a way that fits naturally in the language used. This makes the post even more relevant to Google for the keyword and increases the likelihood people will click on your link as a relevant post to what they are searching for.

3

Insert the keywords in the post's title if you can do so while still keeping the title meaningful to readers. Titles are usually framed between "h1" tags in an HTML document or typed into the "Title" field of blog platforms like WordPress. For example, if the keywords your post is ranking for google.

Insert the keyword in the first sentence of the post if it is not there already. Like the description, use the keywords in a context that makes sense to the reader. Don't let anything, including keywords, jeopardize the quality content that helped get the post to the first page of Google. Again, this will make the post more relevant to those keywords for Google and your visitors.

Building Links

1

Look for two or three other posts you have authored that are relevant to the same subject as your successfully ranked post. Add the keywords your post is ranking well for anywhere on each of these posts and use the words as a hyperlink to your target post. For example, if the keywords were "risk management" you could use:

2

Share a link to the successful post on your social media websites like Google Plus, Twitter, LinkedIn and your Facebook page. Use the keywords in a description before or after the post, as Google uses words close to a link to help determine their context. Some of these shared links, like those on Twitter and Google Plus, will be noticed by Google. Others, like Facebook, are not monitored by Google, but sharing the links may encourage others to share it on other websites that are monitored by Google.

3

Bookmark the post on social bookmark websites like Digg and Stumble Upon.

Decrease Loading any unnecessary code from the page that will slow down its loading time, including JavaScript.
